Made and mailed from my worktable

This little publication grew out of the deep romance I have with the plant world. The history, botany and herbalism I have been digging into for years have been clamoring to be assembled into something you can hold: traditional medicine, plant lore and curiosities from the botanical archives, printed on paper.

Past issues have gone into ghost plants, the great cinnamon-gate, ear oil recipes and the history of the apothecary.

Inside every issue

  • A recipe or activity

Something to make with the plants of the month, like the mullein ear oil in Vol. 1.

  • A plant quiz

Short-answer questions, with the answers printed in the next issue.

  • A medicinal plant card

Printed from a linocut I carve by hand for each issue. Cut it out and keep the set.

  • Finds from the botanical archives

Old remedies and plant lore, dug out of herbals and catalogues a century or more old.

A 5 × 7 booklet on heavy paper, mailed in a kraft envelope.

How the months work

Each issue is printed and packed ahead, so everyone who joins in a month starts together with the next one.

  1. Any day of the month

Subscribe for $8. That payment covers next month’s issue.

  2. Mid-month

Your first issue arrives in your mailbox.

  3. Every 28th after

$8 renews automatically for the following month’s issue.

For example, join on October 10 and your first issue is the November issue, arriving around mid-November. Your next $8 is on November 28, for December.

The printable gift card

Give it as a gift

A small paper gift that keeps arriving.

Give someone 3, 6 or 12 issues, paid once. A printable gift card comes with your order confirmation, ready to write in and hand over.

Their first issue is next month’s, and the gift ends by itself after the last one. Before it does, I’ll email you in case you’d like to keep it coming.
