Herbal Mocktail Mule

I have been talking about the GABA system in the brain a lot lately. GABA is the system that helps us calm down and relax and calm down neurotransmitter excitement. Many people enjoy an alcoholic drink because it enhances GABA’s effects, making them feel calm, at ease, and able to wind down for the night.  But as we all know, alcohol has its drawbacks. Fortunately, we can get similar calming effects with medicinal herbs, and it’s even better when we craft them into herbal mocktails that let you unwind without the downsides.

Ingredients

  • Lemon Balm tea
  • Fresh Ginger
  • 2 Tablespoons Lime Juice
  • 2 Tablespoons Honey or Agave syrup (or more to taste)
  • 4 oz Ginger beer
  • Ice cubes
  • Lime wedge and mint/lemon balm sprigs for garnish

Instructions:

  • Steep one cup of lemon balm and ginger as a strong tea and let cool
  • Combine tea with the sweetener and lime juice
  • Shake with shaker of ice (if you have)
  • Add ice to serving glasses with ginger beer
  • Pour tea mixture over
  • Top with with garnish

Why It Works:

This mocktail combines Lemon Balms’s calming effects with the warming, stomach-soothing properties of ginger. Lemon balm naturally enhances GABA activity, promoting relaxation and reducing anxiety, while ginger adds a spicy kick and improves digestion. If you need more GABA activity feel free to add in a dropperfull of Lemon Balm tincture or Valerian which actually slows the breakdown of GABA *note that valerian is a sedative and may contraindicate with other meds and make you drowsy.
