8 Uses for Herbal Hydrosols

Hydrosols, or floral waters, are amazing byproducts of the essential oil distillation process. These can be distilled from any plant that has aromatic qualities. The amount of oil you get out of the distillation process varies widely from plant to plant and from crop to crop. Unlike essential oils, hydrosols are water-based and contain only trace amounts of essential oils, making them safe for a wide range of uses, including skincare, aromatherapy, culinary applications, and spiritual practices​

With the new copper still I recently acquired with another herbalist friend, I’ve been able to dive deeper into learning how to distill my own hydrosols, and I’m excited to share some of the creative ways you can use botanical hydrosols!

1. Refresh Your Space with a Room and Cleaning Spray

Hydrosols are fantastic natural deodorizers with light, refreshing scents. You can use any type of hydrosol as a room spray to freshen up your space. Just pour some into a spray bottle and mist away! You can also add hydrosols into an essential oil diffuser in place of water and essential oil. If you’re into DIY cleaning solutions, mix your favorite hydrosol with a splash of vinegar and a few drops of essential oil for an all-natural surface cleaner. Not only will your home smell wonderful, but you’ll also enjoy the antimicrobial benefits that many hydrosols offer.

2. Upgrade Your Skincare

If you love a bit of luxury in your skincare routine, try using a hydrosol as a facial toner. Spritz a bit on your skin to hydrate and soothe, and enjoy the gentle fragrance that lifts your mood. My favorite hydrosols for facial toners are Yarrow and Rose. Rose and yarrow alike provide astringency that tones the skin without dehydrating. Both leave your skin clean, plump and tightened.

3. Cocktail and Mocktail Flavoring

Many hydrosols, such as rose and lavender, are safe for consumption. Add a splash to your mocktails or cocktails for a floral twist. Mint hydrosol is the perfect way to flavor a summer drink without diluting it. I often will use herbal teas but unfortunately, to get enough flavor they end up watering down a drink quite a bit – enter consumable hydrosols, they are the perfect solution.

4. Elevate Hair Care

Is your hair in need of a pick-me-up? Use a hydrosol as a hair rinse to boost scalp health and add shine. The subtle aromas of hydrosols make them perfect for bathroom aromatherapy. As as scalp rinse they deposit safe amounts of essential oil without disturbing the tender skin of the scalp and also avoid having to use a carrier oil that is sticky and difficult to get out of the hair later.

5. In the Kitchen

If you’re looking to add a unique twist to your cooking, hydrosols will make you look like a gourmet chef. Safe-to-consume hydrosols like rose, lavender, and chamomile can be used to flavor salad dressings, sauces, and beverages. Their subtle flavors bring a touch of herbal elegance to your dishes and make for a memorable culinary experience.

6. Create DIY Linen and Floor Cleaner

For a quick and easy way to freshen up your linens, spray hydrosols directly or mix your favorite hydrosol with a few drops of essential oil. Spritz it on your bedding and upholstery for a delightful aroma just be careful if you use essential oils that you don’t choose one that can deposit color. You can also use hydrosols in homemade floor cleaners for a natural and fragrant cleaning solution that leaves your home smelling great.

7. Enjoy a Relaxing Bath Soak

There’s nothing like a relaxing bath to unwind after a long day. Add a few generous splashes of hydrosol to your bathwater for a soothing soak. The aromatic properties of hydrosols help calm your mind and rejuvenate your body, making your bath a truly restorative botanical experience.

8. Use as a Natural Insect Repellent

Hydrosols are gentle enough to be used on children and pets, making them a safe choice for a natural insect repellent. Simply spray a bit on exposed skin to help ward off mosquitoes and other biting bugs while enjoying the outdoors. Your skin will thank you for the added soothing touch!
